The Outstanding meme and the Tiny Desk AI trend

Last updated:

The Outstanding meme is The Gap Band song "Outstanding", sung live by Charlie Wilson at an NPR Tiny Desk concert and then remade with AI: people get swapped into his band. It took off with college football coaches whose teams had just lost.

The song: "Outstanding" by The Gap Band

"Outstanding" is a Gap Band song from 1982, with Charlie Wilson on lead vocals. Before the AI trend, it was already a meme of its own: by September 2024 it was the go-to soundtrack for "washed" edits, highlight reels of athletes past their prime such as Kevin Garnett's Brooklyn Nets years, and people called it "the washed anthem".

When people search "outstanding meme" today they usually mean one of two things: the washed edits, or the Tiny Desk AI parody below. This page covers both, since the second grew out of the first.

The real Tiny Desk set

Tiny Desk is NPR Music's concert series, filmed behind a desk in a cramped office full of bookshelves and records. Charlie Wilson, the former lead singer of The Gap Band, is in one that NPR published on 5 June 2023, and he closed with the Gap Band hit "Outstanding". By November 2026 the video had over 7 million views on YouTube.

The part everyone uses is short: the backing singers swaying, then a close-up of Wilson in a blue beanie and gold sunglasses, laughing in the middle of the line, then the sax.

The losing-coaches parody

On 18 October 2026, the TikTok account @theburnerfromhe11 posted "College Football's Week 8 All-Loss Tiny Desk Concert". It used AI to put five head coaches whose teams lost that Saturday into the band, one of them on the sax. The caption said it plainly: "This is an AI parody!" It was made with Higgsfield's motion transfer and had over 4 million views by 4 November.

How it spread

Sports accounts made their own. An NFL version with Jerry Jones and the NFC East coaches "forming a band" went up on the evening of 22 October US time and had about 500,000 views by 4 November. By 24 October, accounts were posting "outstanding tiny desk set" tutorials, and fans were making versions for their own teams. On 26 October the White House posted its own, captioned "Dems are washed up".

Make your own

On the Tiny Desk concert AI page you upload one photo and pick 6 or 15 seconds. The AI puts you in the lead singer's place in the real footage, with the live sound. Add up to two more photos and your friends take the sax and the keys, like the coaches in the parody.

How much does a Tiny Desk video cost?

A 6-second Tiny Desk video costs 5 credits. The cheapest way to make one is the Try pack: $4.99 for 5 credits.
