Original: Charlie Wilson, "Outstanding" at NPR Music's Tiny Desk (2023) · AI render · sample photo is AI-generated
The Tiny Desk AI trend is the one with the losing coaches. On 18 October 2026 a TikTok account posted "College Football's Week 8 All-Loss Tiny Desk Concert", an AI parody of Charlie Wilson's 2023 Tiny Desk concert where five head coaches whose teams had just lost sing The Gap Band's "Outstanding" behind the desk. It now has over 4 million views, and everyone wants their own version.
Our template is the same part of the real concert that the parody used, cut to vertical, with the live sound. Upload a clear photo and the AI puts you in the lead singer's place, in the blue beanie, gold sunglasses and patterned jacket, laughing through the line.
Want the band? Add a second photo for the sax player and a third for the singer at the red keys, and your friends play the 15-second cut with you, at the same price as a solo video. The two backing singers at the back stay as they are.
What is the Tiny Desk AI trend?
It is an AI parody format: take the real footage of Charlie Wilson singing "Outstanding" at NPR's Tiny Desk and swap other people into his band. The first version put five college football coaches on stage the day after their teams lost, and the format spread from there to NFL coaches, politicians and anyone with a group chat.
The song was a joke before the AI version. For a couple of years "Outstanding" had been the soundtrack to "washed" edits, highlight reels of athletes past their prime, so putting people who just lost into the band landed straight away.
Tiny Desk AI trend timeline, 1982 to 2026
1982: The Gap Band release "Outstanding" on the album Gap Band IV (Total Experience Records), with Charlie Wilson on lead vocals. In February 1983 it reaches No. 1 on Billboard's Black Singles chart.
1991 and 1999: covers keep it in the UK charts. Kenny Thomas's version reaches No. 12, and a 1999 version by footballer Andy Cole reaches No. 68.
5 June 2023: NPR publishes "Charlie Wilson: Tiny Desk Concert" for Black Music Month. It is a seven-song set of about half an hour that closes with "Outstanding". By November 2026 it has over 7 million views on YouTube.
By September 2024: "Outstanding" is the go-to song for "washed" edits, the best known a reel of Kevin Garnett's Brooklyn Nets years, and people call it "the washed anthem".
17 October 2026: five of the top seven teams in the AP poll lose on the same Saturday, a first in the poll's history: Georgia, Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama and Texas.
18 October 2026: @theburnerfromhe11 posts "College Football's Week 8 All-Loss Tiny Desk Concert", a 19-second video captioned "This is an AI parody!". Alabama's Kalen DeBoer sings lead and Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman plays the sax, with Kirby Smart, Steve Sarkisian and Curt Cignetti in the band. The creator, a young Alabama fan named Jake, made it with Higgsfield's motion transfer tool. It has over 4 million views by 4 November.
22 and 23 October 2026: Sport & State and AL.com run the first stories about it, and The Athletic interviews the creator. An NFL version with Jerry Jones and the NFC East coaches goes up on the evening of 22 October US time (about 500,000 views by 4 November), and a Patriots version follows.
By 24 October 2026: tutorials for the "outstanding tiny desk set" appear on TikTok, many of them tagged CapCut, and fans start making versions for their own teams.
26 October 2026: the White House posts its own AI Tiny Desk, captioned "Dems are washed up", with about 6.5 million views on X.
27 October 2026: US Google searches for "tiny desk ai" peak. On 4 November they are at about a third of the peak.
The real Tiny Desk set
Tiny Desk is NPR Music's concert series, filmed behind a desk in a cramped office full of books and records. Charlie Wilson, the former lead singer of The Gap Band, played "Charlie, Last Name Wilson", "Computer Love", "There Goes My Baby", "I'm Blessed", "Yearning For Your Love" and "Sweet Yamz" before closing with "Outstanding". Between songs he talks about addiction, homelessness and getting sober.
The part everyone uses comes about 24 minutes in: the backing singers swaying, then a close-up of Wilson in a blue beanie and gold sunglasses, laughing in the middle of the line, then the sax. You can watch the whole concert on NPR's YouTube channel and on npr.org.
What happens in the Outstanding clip
The template comes from NPR's own upload of the concert, from 23:46 to 24:05: the same stretch the coaches parody used. We cut it to vertical shot by shot, so nobody important falls off the edge, and cropped out the NPR corner logo. The live sound stays on.
The 6-second version is the close-up everyone screenshots: the lead singer in the blue beanie and gold aviators, in the middle of the line, breaking into a laugh. You are on screen the whole time, which makes it the right pick for a reaction or a reply.
The 15-second version has four shots. 0 to 2.6 s: the backing singers and the singer at the red keys. 2.6 to 8.8 s: the lead close-up. 8.8 to 12.3 s: the sax player. 12.3 to 15 s: back to the choir and the keys. Choose it if friends are joining, because the sax and the keys only appear in this cut.
Who is who in the band
Lead singer: blue knit beanie, gold aviator sunglasses, a patterned jacket and a gold chain. This is photo 1, and the only role in the 6-second cut.
Sax player: bald, black-framed glasses, black hoodie. Photo 2 replaces him, in the same hoodie, playing the same solo.
Singer at the keys: front row, behind the red keyboard, with long grey-blonde braids and a black sheer top. Photo 3 replaces her.
The two backing singers in black at the back stay as they are. They are small in the frame and often half hidden, so a swap there would barely show.
Solo, duo or the whole band
One photo is a solo: you sing lead with the original band around you. Two photos add the sax, three add the keys. The price does not change with the number of faces: 5 credits for 6 seconds, 15 credits for 15.
Roles follow the upload order, not who looks like whom. A woman can sing lead and a man can take the keys; the model is told to stick to the photo numbers instead of matching people to the original singers. To swap roles, swap the order you upload in.
The parody that started the trend had five coaches. We cover the three people you can see clearly. The band guide below goes through the layout shot by shot.
Photos that work for this clip
The beanie and the sunglasses stay in the shot, so your hair and eyes are mostly covered. What carries the likeness is the lower half of the face: jaw, mouth, beard or no beard, skin tone. A sharp, front-facing photo with even light on that part of your face works best.
Use a photo of one person, close enough that the face fills a good part of the frame. Group photos, heavy filters, masks and photos taken from far away are the usual reasons a render does not look like you.
Only upload yourself or adults who said yes. Photos of celebrities, coaches, players and kids are not allowed, even though the original parody used real coaches.
Posting it
The MP4 is vertical with the live audio, so it goes straight onto TikTok, Reels or Shorts. The captions that work are the ones the coaches version used: a loss, a rough week, a group project that went sideways, then "Outstanding". Mark it as AI-generated when you post.
For a team or a group chat, the band version lands better than three separate solos: everyone is in the same 15 seconds and it reads as one joke.
Tiny Desk AI video ideas
The original joke is someone who just lost, singing "Outstanding" like nothing happened. Keep that energy: the worse the week, the better the clip.
After your team loses: Your team got blown out on Saturday? Post yourself as the lead singer that night. You do not need a caption.
The fantasy league last place: With their OK, give the friend at the bottom of your fantasy league the solo, and pin it in the group chat for the week.
The rec-league coach: Coaching a kids' team or a Tuesday-night league? A clip of you (not the kids) after a rough game makes a good team-chat post.
Office band: Missed a deadline, lost the pitch, broke the build? Make one of yourself for the work chat. Ask before using a coworker's photo.
The whole losing side: The parody put several coaches in the band, and you can do the same with friends who agreed: one on lead, one on the sax, one at the keys. It is the 15-second cut, same price as a solo video.
How much does a Tiny Desk video cost?
A 6-second Tiny Desk video costs 5 credits. The cheapest way to make one is the Try pack: $4.99 for 5 credits.
| Length | Credits | Cheapest pack that covers it |
|---|---|---|
| 6 s | 5 | Try · $4.99 (5 credits) |
| 15 s | 15 | Single · $9.99 (15 credits) |
No subscription. Credits never expire, and a failed render gives your credits back automatically.

PhotoTiny DeskQuestions, answered
Is this the real Tiny Desk footage?
Yes. The template is the part of Charlie Wilson's Tiny Desk performance of "Outstanding" that the coaches parody used, with the live sound. Only the people you upload photos for are replaced.
Is the coaches Tiny Desk video real or AI?
AI. The creator captioned it "This is an AI parody!" and made it with Higgsfield's motion transfer, which puts new faces on the movement of the real NPR footage. The coaches never played the song.
Who made the coaches Tiny Desk video?
A young Alabama fan named Jake, who posts on TikTok as @theburnerfromhe11. He posted it on 18 October 2026, the day after five of the AP top seven lost.
How do I make a Tiny Desk AI video?
Upload one clear photo of your face (or up to three for a band), pick 6 or 15 seconds and press Generate. The AI puts each photo in its spot in the Outstanding clip. It takes a few minutes. Then download it and post it.
Where is the Charlie Wilson Tiny Desk AI template?
It is this page. The template is the "Outstanding" part of Charlie Wilson's 2023 Tiny Desk concert, cut to vertical with the live sound. Upload a photo and you get the lead singer's spot. It is not a CapCut template: you make the video here and download it.
Why is "Outstanding" called the washed song?
Before the Tiny Desk parody, it was the usual soundtrack for "washed" edits, highlight reels of athletes past their prime, such as Kevin Garnett's Brooklyn Nets years. That is why it fit coaches who had just lost, and why the White House captioned its version "Dems are washed up".
Where can I watch the full Charlie Wilson Tiny Desk?
On NPR Music's YouTube channel and on npr.org, published on 5 June 2023. It runs about half an hour, and "Outstanding" is the last song.
Can I put my friends or my whole team in it?
Yes, up to three people, one photo each: photo 1 is the lead singer, photo 2 the sax player, photo 3 the singer at the keys in front. It costs the same as a solo video. The sax player and the keys singer are only in the 15-second cut; the two backing singers at the back stay from the original.
Which length should I pick?
6 seconds is the close-up where the lead laughs in the middle of the line, and you are on screen the whole time. 15 seconds starts on the backing singers and the keys, cuts to the lead close-up, then the sax solo and the choir, so pick it if friends are joining. 6 seconds costs 5 credits, 15 seconds costs 15.
Is this affiliated with NPR, Tiny Desk, Charlie Wilson or The Gap Band?
No. TrendTemplate is independent and not affiliated with NPR, Tiny Desk, Charlie Wilson or The Gap Band or the original creators. The template uses the original clip and its sound.
